At Home: Updates to The Powder Room

Apr 6

Hey! Happy Monday and welcome to your new week!

The home projects keep rolling out over here and this is a biggie! Such an incredible update and improvement that I had to share a glimpse before the room is finished. Which will be tomorrow – Yay!

We’ve been decluttering, organizing, planning for future projects / improvements, and also getting actual improvement projects completed…at least what we can given the limited resources and access. This powder room was already in the works before shelter-in-place orders were announced. Thankfully we ordered the wallpaper, fixtures, mirror and lights weeks ago and everything arrived shortly after. So it was full-steam ahead on this project while we are safe at home!

BEFORE

An incredible after wouldn’t be the same without seeing the before or understanding the why. So go ahead and take in this one…

This is a modest sized powder room, but the dark red paint made it feel small. Not to mention, outdated. What we knew for sure was we wanted to add a beautiful wallpaper to brighten the space and bring it current. We also love the vanity which provides great storage and it has a beautiful countertop, but weren’t crazy about the patterned sink bowl…

I’m not sure if giants lived here before we moved in but the towel hanger and lights were mounted too high on the wall. The lights weren’t casting enough light due to how high they were mounted AND the amount of light they put out…

We debated between updating the powder room or the dining room. Since this is a small space that would make a quick win in our column, we aimed to move quickly through this one first and spend a little more time designing / planning the dining room. This is the powder room most frequented by guests, which are many around here…so making it light and fresh was important to us. Not that guests are coming over these days…but you get my drift.

Wallpaper and lighting choices are not my strong point. In an effort to make a quick decision that was the correct one (no wrong wallpaper choices as this can be an expense to have installed), I reached out to a local expert for help.

Recently I was introduced to a newish interior designer and connected with her only to help with a wallpaper and lighting selection. Turns out she was so “on it”, our design vibe was a match, and she was quick to offer selections we loved that ultimately she helped me source everything … even down to locating a new sink bowl. She’s awesome, quick and so easy / fun to work with! (For my local peeps, she doesn’t have a website yet, but does have an Instagram account you can find here.) She consulted with me for 1 hour and only a few days later presented 3 wallpaper options – 1 of which was the perfect fit for this space…and compliments the family room just outside the powder room too…

Stunning!

With the wallpaper and all other items selected, I first had my handyman lower the junction boxes. I framed out the new mirror in advance of him lowering those. Painters tape is one of my best friends…

And he helped me remove the sink bowl to see if the new one would work…and it does. We just need to grind out the countertop a bit so it can sit correctly and then seal it in place…

We removed the towel and toilet paper holders, then the entire room was patched and primed. The primer alone was a huge improvement – haha!…

Look at how much brighter the bathroom is already with a coat of white primer…

After the bathroom was primed, the wallpaper went up…and I am IN LOVE!…

So so gorgeous! And exactly what this powder room and home needed. Again, our goal is always making a home better – one room at a time. And this one is WAYYYYY better!…

I can barely wait for the finishing touches this week…the mirror alone makes my heart warm…

The wallpaper is from Susan Connor in New York. Grateful Lisa introduced me to Susan’s website and beautiful design / fabrics. You can read more about her here in this story. But you will definitely want to take a look at her gorgeous fabrics and products!…

She’s one of a kind, for sure.

Look forward to sharing the finished room tomorrow or Wednesday! Other projects on tap right now? I can’t sit still…These are just a few!…

Decluttering the garage, binning items for the attic, measuring and designing updated storage

A new floor mirror we ordered in December is due to arrive this week – so excited! But we first need to relocate an oversized dresser before it shows up.

Ordering and installing a couple shelves in the gym

Beginning a wallpaper selection for the dining room…maybe lighting as well

I’m still very much working on client organizing projects – from home, of course. About 10ish projects were placed on hold during this time. And I have awesome NEW things coming your way soon. Like very soon! Can’t wait to share more!!!

Hope you have a wonderful Monday guys!

xx,

Sam

  1. What a big difference painting over that Lipstick Red with Primer…and the icing on the cake is really the patterned wallpaper!
