Another Year Wiser…

May 20

…Hopefully!

Yes, today is my birthday. The number will remain an unknown in here. Let’s just say i’m getting really good at being 21. 😉
I’m not sharing this day with you because i’m looking for “happy birthday!” wishes or extra attention. I’m here sharing this day because as I get older I realize exactly what’s important in my life. Yes, I can now officially say I’m getting old….This is the kind of deep-thinking generally done by the older set. Anyway, I like to take a little time around my birthday to think a little deeper.
Honestly, it’s hard to have another birthday and not reflect on your accomplishments, your failings, your areas of improvement, your hopes and dreams, your goals, and the blessing of still being alive to enjoy it all. No matter how crazy backwards this world seems at times, we’re still lucky to be part of it. Experiencing it. Challenging ourselves to be better human beings.
A birthday is a time to reflect on where I am and what I hope to accomplish in my next year. As far as where I am now on the ol’ age timeline, I have mucho to be grateful for…
* 3 precious children…I never thought something/one could simultaneously provide so much joy and pain and stress. The successes and challenges I’ve experienced as a mother have only made me a better human being. Less judgmental. More kind and patient (sometimes). They give me a reason to slow down to enjoy and cherish the moment. They spur a stronger connection to family and remind me how important family is. They also give me hope that any family relationship issues I face (we all have them!) might be healed through the addition of this new generation.
* A new house…Yes, the house is officially ours. Even if I made the trip to SF this weekend and was denied access (long, painful, stressful, tear-filled story – just think contingencies and addendum’s), today we can officially say we once again own a california home. Can’t think of a better birthday present than the purchase of a huge fixer upper loaded with a jillion projects.  = happiness!
* A loving and supportive extended family…And the fact this coming year we will be living close to a portion of our family once again.
* This blog! this little space has become an incredibly fulfilling outlet outside of motherhood. I’m so grateful for the readers I’ve met over the last 1.5 years. Thank you for reading! I hope to continue sharing easy, simple organization and home projects….And some bigger ones too with the purchase of the new house…errr, old house.
The list of areas to improve upon during the next year far outweighs the above list….What can I say, I tend to be hard on myself. 🙂 But I’m also not big on overwhelming myself. Even with a list as long as I’ve assembled, the number one area of improvement for this birthday year is my health….
In the last year I’ve noticed a significant difference in my skin. And don’t even get me started on the ol’ bod. Yikes! much needs to be improved overall. I suppose I  could start by actually making an effort to work out. Living in California will give me more of an option to do that – daily. We’ll be living close to a walking path…And can even walk the path to school with the kids, walk to the market, walk to get coffee. Walk walk walk. Maybe even invest in a bike or use my dusty roller blades. Exercise will soon be my middle name.
Along with fitness comes what we fuel our bodies with. we buy a lot a organic food, but living in the health-food capitol of the world will provide more opportunities to improve in this area.
As far as what i’ll do with the rest of my day – nothing. Glorious!! the kids are at school today. Husband is home with me. We’re having sushi for dinner…And hopefully chocolate cake. I”m all about low-key celebrations with meaning.
Hoping you have a wonderful day too!
