Shelving, Inc reached out after finding me and my love of wire shelving on Instagram. They are correct, I do love a good wire shelf. While some spaces need a step-up with a solid shelf or built-in unit, many times wire shelving can easily solve the problem…And then some given all the cool liners, shelf attachments and accessories available these days! Shelving.com and TheShelvingStore.com have it all. This sweet, family-owned business offers exceptional customer service (and blogger service), has a staff ready to help choose the correct system for you and an endless list of products. Personally, I got lost on the site myself dreaming of products that would work for my clients.
But let’s talk about the before in NYC. First up, was surveying the scene through images shared long-distance and, yes, my people indeed needed some help…
This tiny kitchen, with very little counter and cabinet space, was in desperate need of vertical storage. They had 2 small wire shelving units, but check out the wasted space above. Since this is an apartment, I also had the additional challenge of not being able to build a system into the wall. Free-standing wire shelving to the rescue!
After receiving the overall measurements of this corner / wall space and communicating with the apartment owners about their needs, I worked with my new friend Kim at Shelving, Inc to choose the perfect piece. Here was my product game plan…
Next was shipping the product (and me!) to NYC to get the job done! Couldn’t wait to see the issue in person and help them get a little more organized in their kitchen.
You can see they had some glassware and bar items on top of one of the shelves…
My plan all along – without anyone knowing – was to keep one of the two existing shelves to create a real “bar” for them. But I didn’t know which one would stay until I was there in person. This is also why I opted for the 48″ wide shelving unit. This allowed me to keep one of the shelves to use as a bar. And we needed to keep some floor space available for the trash can, since there’s no room for it anywhere else…
It was definitely a challenge working in a tight space (and hot / humid July NYC weather), but assembling the shelf itself was a breeze! Like I always do when working with a free-standing wire shelf, I make sure to maximize every bit of space in between each shelf. This is critical…and a reason I opted to bring in the extra shelf. I do this by setting the tallest item on the shelf…
Then placing the pole sleeves at the correct height and dropping the shelf into place…
Easy!
Another part of my secret plan was to save one entire shelf for the plug-in appliances, which would be a serious upgrade from how they were previously stacked on top of each other. This ended up working out beautifully!
Hello after…
And hello bar with a butcher block top for prepping drinks…
The shelf liner is from Chadko. Their amazing line of beautiful shelf liners is available on the Chadko site or on Shelving.com. Honest feedback – this acrylic liner is super high-quality. It’s thick and durable – most shelf liners I’ve worked with are flimsy, thin and not scratch-resistant. This liner will last forever! I opted for the clear finish to let this white kitchen shine and not further close-in the space…
Since we were already sorting and purging, I re-located a few items to the new shelf to create even more cabinet and counter space.
Before…
After…
A much happier kitchen with a lot more space and storage!
