Simply Organized Style: My Skincare Regime

Aug 12

Taking care of ourselves isn’t necessarily top of the list with kids home all summer. And a full work schedule. I’m sure I’m not alone in saying I let go of my eating, fitness, skincare and mental wellness routines over the last 2 months. For me, taking care of my mind and body is important because, believe it or not, organizing for living is a HIGHLY physical job. Emotionally draining too. When I don’t spend time connecting with myself and my body, I feel it in every other area of my life. I’ve definitely been more snappy lately, which is counter to my generally zen / chill demeanor.

Since my sleep schedule hasn’t been regular this summer as well (we’re in for a rude wakening come Monday morning – #yikes), I’m noticing the effects of that and it’s also showing in my skin. Hello, dark circles.

When I was replenishing some of the skincare items, I thought I’d finally share my skincare routine with you guys. Some of you were on that scope I did a few months ago where I shared my products live and chatted about each. Remember when I said I’d also post the details at the end of that week? Ha! #thisismylife Well, here we are – this is happening now!

Before we get started, I wanted to mention I’m not getting paid to talk about these products. These are TRULY products I use and have used for years. For example, my face wash is the only one I’ve used for 20+ years. I added a few affiliate links for your convenience, but trust me – this is Sam’s everyday routine and has been since I started taking better care of my skin.

The one compliment I’ve received consistently since I was little is about my complexion. Some are blessed with awesome hair (not me) and some have great skin (raises hand). I admit, my complexion is nice, but my body – not so much. I suffer from psoriasis so I have little patches here and there to tend to while also see a dermatologist regularly for treatment. I have sensitive skin. I don’t tan, I freckle. I also have aging skin so I’m watchful of sun exposure, water intake and my skincare game.

With sensitive skin, I’ve tried many products. These are the tried and true miracles for me.

Face Wash

I wash my face every morning / evening with Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel. My first facial ever (won’t confess how many years ago) was in a salon that exclusively used this line and I fell hard for this cleanser. It’s soap free and fragrance free. It comes in a variety of sizes, but I purchase the largest size available with a pump – keep one in the shower and one near my bathroom sink. If I’m ever without this face wash and use something else, I can see and feel the difference in my skin. I use it to remove everything, including eye make-up.

Toner

After washing, I spray Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner all over my face and neck. There’s no fragrance or color. Toning hydrates your skin and preps it for your moisture routine.

Serums

I treat myself to a facial 2-3x per year (wish I could do more!) and see the same woman each time. She repeats over and over the importance of sunblock and serums. I can hear her sweet accent ringing in my head, “serums, serums and more serums!”. Before meeting her, I was religiously using just one…

And still do, but now alternate between it and the 2 other serums she recommended. This La Prairie serum helps restore lost elasticity, firms and plumps skin and smoothes current wrinkles while preventing new wrinkles from forming. I love this product and some of you may cringe at the price. I promise you, this bottle lasts nearly a year – especially now that I’m alternating serums and extending the life of the bottle. I love using it in the evening so it soaks into my skin all night.

If I had to pick a handful of must-have’s to be stranded with on an island, Vital C would be one. It’s a miracle in a bottle. Again, I alternate with the other two serums on this list. And that’s a good thing because you don’t want to apply too much vitamin c to your skin. I use this serum a few times a week in the morning.

The final serum and most recent addition is Pevonia Soothing Propolis. This product line is for sensitive skin, has healing properties and attacks those little red lines that suddenly appear. Ugh. Great product!

Moisture

I’m going to make a bold statement, but have the personal proof to stand behind it. This is THE ONLY moisturizer I will ever use. Told you – bold. When I’ve run out and attempted to fill in with another moisturizer until I can stop at Nordstrom – you can visually see the difference in my skin. My wrinkles are more evident, my skin is drier and less glowy, and my make-up doesn’t go on as well. I’ve learned my lesson on this one and only use this product. Now, I agree – the price is shocking, but not only is this 150% worth the price tag – it lasts a long time because you only use a pea-size amount for your entire face. This jar lasts a minimum of 9 months. Sometimes more if I skip evenings and use a night serum.

After washing, toning, serum-ing and moisturizing, time to focus on those fine lines around the eyes. This is my other must-have going to that abandoned island with me…

Eye Cream

Ladies, those wrinkles around the eyes, dark circles, puffiness?…this eye lift cream is your miracle in a jar. It targets the 7 most prominent signs of aging around your eyes – fine lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness, loss of elasticity, puffiness, dark eye circles and dryness. And I can confirm, as your guinea pig, this cream helps with all of those. I use it morning and night.

Night Repair

One of my best kept secrets? This tiny unassuming bottle of amazingness. It’s Dermalogica’s overnight repair serum and you won’t believe the way your skin looks in the morning. Just a 1-2 drops is enough for cellular repair. In the morning my skin looks plumper and feels SO soft and pretty. As with all serums though, be careful not to use more than the recommended amount. Serums can contribute to clogged pores.

Daily Body Care

This is the bar soap that has never failed me and my sensitive skin. Nothing super exciting to say about this except that it does the job. 🙂

My body has dry, sensitive skin (especially my legs) and this lotion not only smells heavenly, it’s hydrating. If you don’t like a tropical smell, there are other scents.

Occasional Items

With sensitive skin, I can’t use any old peel or a harsh face scrub. Those scrubs really aren’t good for your face anyway. Now we have peels to help slough away dead skin. And Pevonia makes a peel for sensitive skin. It’s seriously like a mini-at-home-facial. 1-2x per month, I put it on my face 5 minutes before a shower. It gives an immediate deep surface cleansing, removes dead cells, impurities and clogging. My complexion is always brighter after a peel and I feel like my face absorbs more of my other products after using this.

I am obsessed with this coffee scrub! This was the first product I discovered over social media. I followed their feed for a while, listening to their testimonials. Finally one day I pulled the trigger and ordered a package. In love! This all-natural coffee scrub not only removes dead skin and makes you feel baby soft, it targets cellulite. I love love this product.

Our lips are the most neglected area in our skincare regimes. When was the last time you put sunblock on your lips? Or your children’s lips? I’m guilty! This lip scrub was gifted to me a few years ago. Not only was is a great gift idea, but I couldn’t believe there was a scrub specifically created for lips. It removes dry, flaky skin and leaves your lips ultra soft.

On My Radar

I’m seeing more wrinkles and dryness after a long summer spent at the pool with the kids. And more age – coughcoughcough. La Prairie makes a great night cream that repairs, moisturizes and rejuvenates while you sleep. I’m all about overnight repair (especially after reading this book – which I will be writing about in here soon!) so this product is on my radar.

If you have sensitive or dry skin, hope this list of products will help you. These really are my every day lifelines. Whenever I’ve steered off track because I ran out and wanted to grab something in between, I regret making that decision. And feel free to share your products with me in the comment section!

    Hi Sam,

Thank you so much for posting this! I watched your scope and couldn’t wait for your blog update. I have to confess I rushed out and bought the cleanser and La Prairie moisturiser straight away. My skin is very sensitive (and also getting older!). Thank you for the insight into your regime, really love these kind of posts from you!

I'd Love To Hear From You!
