After a hectic holiday season, it’s so nice to quietly regroup, declutter and dig into home improvement projects. Especially during the cold, wet winter months, indoor projects are a fun way to satisfy your DIY fix. Well, that’s if you’re like me and can’t sit still. On another “if you’re like me” note and spend way more time in the laundry room than you’d care to, this is a great space to first focus your new year’s energy.

But then again, if your laundry room looked like this…something tells me you’d have no issue with this chore. For hours. I certainly wouldn’t!…

Suddenly, I’m sensing a lot of mom’s out there planning their own time outs. heh!

My project this month in partnership with Lowe’s took place right here…in this beautiful combo laundry room / mudroom. Now, it didn’t start out this way. But that’s exactly why I scoped out the space and chose to focus here this month.

This laundry room belongs to one of the sweetest, busiest families I know. Transforming their laundry room was a total pleasure…and gave me the great backdrop to share some tips on how easy it is to refresh and organize your laundry room for a brand new year!

Of course, I was excited to partner with Lowe’s again to make this a reality. Thank you, Lowe’s! xoxo

LAUNDRY ROOM BEFORE

The areas of focus in this laundry room were bringing it up to date with a fresh coat of paint and demo’ing of a random shelf that really wasn’t offering much in terms of function or storage…

You can see here how shallow the shelf was over the washer / dryer. It was a sad 5-6″ deep, which didn’t give us many options in terms of adding nice containers or baskets for laundry supplies…

The laundry room was a dated shade of yellow and the walls, showing years of wear and tear, needed a little love…

We also needed organizing solutions to help this family sort and stay on top of the laundry piles…

The opening beneath the counter was surely intended for hampers, so I spent time sourcing the perfect set…

I was also dreaming of counter organization for them…

On the opposite side of the laundry room is the most beautiful built-in mudroom…

However the upper cubbies were not being utilized to maximize storage space. These are the perfect spot for baskets to contain out of season items or backstock cleaning supplies…

The mudroom also needed paint touch ups…

Finally, the washer and dryer, left behind by the previous owners, weren’t running all that well. Time for a budget-friendly, high-efficiency update!

PAINT

First step was the demo of the single, random shelf along with a fresh coat of HGTV by Sherwin Williams paint. I chose one of my old stand-bys – swiss coffee.

Look at this bright and happy after!…

Typically, swiss coffee is used as a trim color, but it’s one of my favorite wall colors because it’s a shade warmer than a bright, stark white. I was so pleased with how this color immediately made an impact and brightened the space!…

The same paint color was used in the mudroom.

UPDATE YOUR WASHER AND DRYER GAME

After the paint was dry, we brought in an exceptional and budget-friendly washer / dryer set…

This decision didn’t come without a lot of research.

I not only wanted to deliver additional storage and convenience (less backaches!) for this family by adding pedestals, but I was searching for one with incredible customer reviews. AND something all of you could afford as well. What is the deal with washer and dryer prices nowadays? Yikes! Personally, I don’t need all the fancy bells & whistles…what is most important is that your set will last a LONG time, cleans clothing well, cuts down on energy / water costs, and doesn’t break the bank.

Lowe’s has a wide selection of top brands you would recognize, and they have a great range of prices, but I loved reading all of the customer reviews. It can sometimes be a pain to dig through reviews, but when you’re investing in appliances that YOU NEED to work well, take your time to read this feedback. These are incredibly helpful!

In the end, I chose a GE Front-Loading Washer and Dryer set (with steam technology) and 2 pedestals with storage drawers.

The GE washer is a time saver, running a full load in just 37 minutes! The steam penetrates deep, but still protects your fabrics.

And the homeowner could not believe how little energy and water it takes to run this set. They are going to save “loads” of money.

Sorry – I had to! haha!

I love the number of cycle options, but my favorite is that you can customize your own cycle to wash clothing exactly as you wish! The washer is only $699 – a huge value! – and 94% of customers recommended this product…

The GE dryer we chose is super smart!…it can sense the moisture in the drum and dries accordingly, ensuring clothing doesn’t get overheated or damaged. Love this feature!…

The generous sized, stainless steel drum resists rust…

And it certainly doesn’t hurt that the set is very pretty!…Yes, I just said it was pretty. Remember, I have a thing about home improvement. The emotions run deep.

To give the family more storage and less backaches, I added 2 GE pedestals beneath the set…

The pedestals offer so much storage that it wasn’t necessary to add floating shelves in this space, which is something I had been considering as a possible diy…

The drawers are a great spot to store away overflow laundry supplies, cleaning rags, or anything you’d like to safely tuck away…

ORGANIZE WITH BASKETS

To resolve the dirty laundry clutter, I added two beautiful laundry hampers…

These wire beauties fit perfectly side x side under the counter…

I love the iron detail and that the cloth lining conceals the dirty clothing piled inside…

I added another pretty bin on the counter for dry cleaning only items…

The bin fit perfectly on the counter behind the washer / dryer set…and great place to toss those dry clean items as clothing is sorted…

Beautiful baskets were the answer in the mudroom as well…

These are great for containing anything you don’t need to grab every day, yet also keeps items within reach if you do…

I added a simple label to categorize as needed. These water hyacinth baskets are the best and I use them all the time in all sorts of spaces when organizing for clients…

ADD BOOT TRAYS

Since this laundry room has door entry points from a few spots – all coming from an exterior door – dirty shoes frequently land here. And we are in rainy season…thankfully getting much-needed rain!…

To keep the floor clean, I measured the space and found the perfect boot trays to keep the floor dry…

This rainy season all they need to do is rinse off the tray, instead of mopping an entire floor…

A perfect fit too!…

MAKE IT PRETTY

When your space is pretty, suddenly chores seem to be a little more pleasant. I love to add trays and pretty containers to keep laundry supplies organized, but beautiful. The baskets helped clear this counter, giving us room to make it pretty…

As soon as we were done photographing the space, I ran home to get my laundry…do you think they’d notice if I came over a few days a week to do our laundry? It’d be quick with these washer and dryers! haha!

AFTER

A few simple updates and organization additions made this laundry room project a beautiful happy ever after! Couldn’t wait to share with you guys!…

Of course a post around here wouldn’t be complete without a sneaky shot from one of my favorite assistants…

Amazing job, Sam! That laundry room…dreamy…especially those built in cubbies! You’ve made this room functional and beautiful at the same time. Even though we have a very nice sized home, they chose to put the laundry in the garage. I hate it, and am trying to find some ways to make it more functional (while still parking two cars in a two car garage) and pretty at the same time. I’m sure these homeowners are ecstatic with the results!

    • Samantha says:

Awe, thank you Shannon! And I hear you – I feel like most homes have big challenging spaces…or spaces that make you wonder what the previous owner was thinking. haha! Thank you so much – they are very very happy!

      xx,
      Sam

Hi, Sam!! I went to Lowe’s for a swatch of Swiss Coffee and I couldn’t find it in the HGTV paint. Can you share the #?

    • Samantha says:

      Hi,

Yes, you’ll need to color match the color – it’s originally a Behr or Benjamin Moore color. The paint Dept should have no issue getting that mixed if you tell them the color. 🙂

LOVE that you researched through the comments to find a LONG-LASTING set!! So many designers just go for the ones that look nice, without considering that these get used and touched every day. It makes such a difference and shows what a great organizer you are!

I'd Love To Hear From You!
