Marvelous Mudroom Organization for the New Year

Jan 9

Twice a year, my friends Christy & Amy of 11 Magnolia Lane host a series called Operation: Organization. In August we focus on back to school and in January, as you would guess, we focus on the New Year. This is a fun way to see what my fellow bloggers are up to in January as they share their organizing projects. I’m always inspired and hope you are too. Thanks again to Christy & Amy for inviting me to take part!

After reading my post, be sure to hop over to see Christy’s post about pantry organization – love it!

As for me, I have a lot going on here in the New Year. This morning I’m actually kicking it off with a bang by joining Evernote live from their Bay Area headquarters for a q&a about organizing. If you catch this post in time to see me live, please join us! The replay will live forever on their FB page, so don’t worry if you’re seeing this after the fact. This month, I’m also busy as a professional organizer helping families get organized. And I’m focusing on my own home too – revisiting systems or tidying after the holiday madness. One of the biggest hot spots in my house that needs revisiting from time to time is our garage mudroom.

You may recall, I shared it in a previous Operation: Organization post…

Since then, I’ve created or organized a few more mudrooms that I’d love to share with you today.

Marvelous Mudroom Organization for the New Year

Do you feel like you are constantly tripping over your coats, backpacks, gloves and shoes? Are you worried someone will slip and get hurt from the mud, rain or melted snow that gets tracked in? It’s the New Year, the kids are back in school, and it’s time to make some changes or updates. It’s time to pay attention to your mudroom, or create one in the garage or just inside the house from the garage. Taking the time to get your mudroom area organized means your home will stay dry, neat and safe all winter long!

This summer, I loved working with this Mom of 3 young boys (can you imagine it?) to help her get a mudroom and command center set up. She was looking for a way to organize the avalanche of school papers and homework packets that were about to descend upon them.

We installed a few wall-mounted organizing solutions, such as this beautiful wood and wire wall basket system and some hooks she already had on hand (from Anthro). She also had the adorable wooden stool from Serena & Lily to complete the corner.

We cleared off this bright, beautiful built-in so she could add a few colorful accent pillows. Remember, she’s a mother of 3 boys, so we have to get that feminine touch in wherever possible! The throw pillows are from Anthro. The shelf above created a nice place to display the boy’s seasonal artwork. The drawers under the bench were our main focus and we spent a little time re-organizing them to accommodate sports gear and household items she can grab without the need to run to the garage.

Once we had the mudroom ready we created a very cool command center just for her. This little space was carved out in order to keep her school papers and calendar under control. The hanging wall basket in the mudroom was for the boys. This was a space all her own!

I fell in love with this project and she loves it, too! She now has a small desk with drawers where she can store her laptop and other Mom necessities.

Another garage mudroom of 2016 was this beauty. Here’s the before…

And the glorious after…

I don’t always suggest Elfa, unless it’s a no-brainer AND it’s on sale. This was the perfect timing for this space. I love this shelving system from The Container Store and have used it for numerous projects. It’s 30% off right now, everyone! It’s a perfect time to get cracking on projects that need a simple, flexible and an overall amazing shelving system. I love the little bench too!

Click here for step-by-step instructions on how to measure and hang the Elfa shelving system.

Another mudroom project was on a wall of this Mom’s laundry room, located just inside from the garage…

The Elfa shelving system came to the rescue here, too. Now she has shelves and hooks for storage, shoes, backpacks and that adorable, convenient bench for putting on / taking off shoes and boots. She’s also using the shelves and baskets to contain laundry and utility items. The whole family really appreciates the extra room this project created, as well as enjoying the aesthetically pleasing organized space.

I love helping families discover the joys of being organized and living a life where there’s a place for everything, there is little or no clutter, and life runs more smoothly.

I hope you enjoy these DIY mudroom organization projects and that they give you ideas for your dream mudroom of the future. If you enjoyed my post, be sure to check out my fellow bloggers joining Operation: Organization this series. I’m happy to say each one of these ladies are personal friends of mine and have met each of them in person at conferences / blog events. I’m in great company here and am so grateful!

  1. These all look great, Sam! I know your clients are so grateful for the beautifully organized spaces you create for them. Thanks for joining us again for Operation: Organization and sharing your talents with our readers! XO, Christy

  2. Jennifer says:

Hi! Can you share your source for the white bench with three bins that appeared in many of the photos? I’m looking for something similar. Thank you!

  3. Mary says:

Wonderful organization of the spaces! I really like the built-in and the pretty throw pillows! And the Elfa shelving did a great job for the garage spaces. I hadn’t thought of using that before. We might have to try that in ours. 🙂

I'd Love To Hear From You!
