You know that thing you’ve been meaning to do for a while? That small task that should take only a few minutes, but for some reason you keep putting it off? Well, meet my little task…without judgement, please!
Yes, that *was* my Mac keyboard. *i’m ashamed!* Notice I said “was”. Because right now, I’m blissfully typing away on a sparkling-clean, like-new, white keyboard! Check this after…
If I had only known this would take 2 minutes, I would have completed this task a long time ago.
First of all, how did my keyboard get this dirty? I have no idea! I’m obviously a clean freak and wash my hands several times a day. I think it got to this point over a couple years of working away on this baby…and my kids occasionally hop onto this keyboard too. We all know how diligent they are about hand washing. Ha!
Now…why did it take me so long to finally break down and clean it? I had enough. Every day I would sit down to work and tell myself I was going to research how to clean this keyboard when I was done with x, y, or z…but then when I was done working, I’d walk away from the computer and forget I made that promise. That is until the next time I sat down here again. I’d see the keyboard and be reminded I still hadn’t done anything.
Anyone feel me?
I was under the impression it would take something serious to clean the keyboard. But was shocked to find out all it took was a paper towel, glass cleaner and a gentle touch. That’s it! I use a lot of water / microfiber for cleaning. But when I need a glass cleaner, this is my go-to because it’s safe and not full of ammonia. It’s the best!…
( glass cleaner )
All I did was spray a little foam onto a paper towel…
Then I squished the foam into the towel so that it was damp…
I then wrapped my finger inside a small section…
And gently cleaned the keys, with minimal pressure. Note that I turned my computer and the wireless keyboard off during this process…
After every couple keys, I would move my finger to a new clean damp spot on the paper towel…
In only a couple minutes the entire keyboard – and in between the keys – was completely clean!…
Was seriously SO surprised how little time this took and that it didn’t require a special cleaning method or product. Just glass cleaner, folks! No alcohol or harsh rubbing. Everyone has paper towels and glass cleaner!
Felt so good getting up this morning to write this blog post!…

Feels good kicking off a new year without this task hanging over me…or making me kick myself each time I sit at my desk. Do you have that small task hanging on your shoulders? Get it done and kick off your new year without it bugging you anymore!
Happy weekending everyone!

I really enjoy your organization ! I have a question you may have ran across like me some time ago, but I hope you were better t keeping the info than I was. LOL It was a combination I believe of vinegar and canola oil used to clean and treat wood and restored it to a great like new finish. I do not remember the amounts of each, I used this on my wood bathroom cabinets and on my parents bathroom cabinets when putting their home on the market.
i do this but with a Clorox Wipe, that way I’m getting rid of germs too
This is super good to know! Ive seen people freaking out bc of how dirty their white max keyboard was. XO!
Worked for me! 🙂 Only difference, I used a foaming spray glass cleaner WITH ammonia, because that’s what I happened to have on hand. Doesn’t smell of ammonia anyway, so no nastiness. Worked like a charm. BTW, human skin, including hands, do produce oils, so no more blaming the kids, k? 😉 Also, I’ll bet you use a hand cream in the Winter to prevent cracks, right? 🙂
Oh, I forgot – I have a USB-connected keyboard, so I just unplugged it before cleaning. Easy peasy.
I have been using a damp paper towel (water) and it was worked well too. Will try the glass cleaner to see how it goes. Having kids use equipment doesn’t help to keep them clean, although I do insist on them washing hands before use.
Thanks for sharing this! It was extremely useful, and now I have a clean keyboard too 😉
You are SO welcome!!!
This is such a neat trick. I wish Apple made their keyboards all black as a standard, similar to the iMac Pro keyboard.
